Lesson 1.2: Step-by-step guide on how to brand your small business yourself

Branding is vital for hospitality businesses as it creates a distinct identity, builds trust, and fosters customer loyalty. It helps businesses connect emotionally with their audience, enhances recognition, and sets them apart in a competitive market. A strong brand ensures a consistent experience, encouraging repeat business and positive recommendations. But, before you can create a brand, there are important key questions you should answer.

10 key branding considerations:

Define your brand identity

Start with fleshing out the mission, values, and personality of your brand.

  • What is your mission, and what values define your business? (what does your business stand for?)
  • What makes your brand unique?
  • What kind of experience do you want to deliver to your customers?
  • Bonus question to ponder: if your brand was a person, what personality would they have?

Know your audience

Base your branding efforts on the wants and needs of your target market.

  • Who is your target audience, and what are their demographics, preferences, and needs?
  • What do your ideal customers look for in a café, restaurant, hotel, or pub?
  • How can you align your branding efforts with the wants and needs of your target market?

Do competitor research

Analyse what the competitors are doing in order to clearly define the market gaps and opportunities for differentiation.

  • What are your competitors doing well, and where are they falling short?
  • What gaps exist in the market that your business could fill?
  • How does your brand position differentiate itself from others in the industry?

Create your visual identity

Start thinking about your visual identity. We live in a visual world after all. We will explore this in more depth in the next lesson.

  • What logo, colour palette, typography, and visual elements best represent your brand?
  • Should you design these yourself using free tools, or would hiring a freelancer be a better option for your needs? (we will explore what tools you can use to create them yourself in the next lesson).
  • How can you ensure visual consistency across all brand elements?

Develop your brand messages

Humans love stories. It is important to create a strong brand story that reflects your values and resonates with your audience.

  • What is your brand’s story, and how does it reflect your values?
  • What tagline and mission statement will resonate with your audience?
  • How can you craft marketing messages that align with your brand identity?

Design brand collateral

Designing brand collateral is important because it creates tangible, consistent touch-points that reinforce your brand identity and leave a lasting impression on customers.

  • What branded materials (e.g., business cards, menus, signage, packaging, social media graphics) will your business need?
  • Which tools or platforms can you use to design and print these materials affordably? (we will explore this in the next lesson)

Build your online presence

Around 80% of people will look at a hospitality business’ website before making a decision on whether to eat there (source). Additionally, around 60% of diners check a hospitality business’ social media before deciding to eat there (source). Therefore it is critical you provide your customers with a pleasant online experience.

  • What website and social media channels should you create for your business?
  • How can you use your brand identity consistently across all digital platforms?
  • What strategies can you use to engage with your audience online?

Deliver the same customer experience

Make sure that everything from the ambience and decor to service and menu items shows your brand. Consistency is key.

  • How can your ambience, décor, service, and menu items reflect your brand identity?
  • What steps can you take to ensure a consistent customer experience?

Ask for feedback and iterate

Collect feedback from customers and stakeholders to know how your brand is perceived and where improvements can occur. Base your iterations and refinements on this over time.

  • How will you collect feedback from customers and stakeholders about your brand?
  • What processes will you use to identify areas for improvement?
  • How can you refine and evolve your brand based on feedback?

Stay authentic and evolve

Be authentic to your identity and brand values but flexible to market changes and the needs of customers. Keep on evolving your branding strategy to be relevant in your competitive environment.

  • How can you stay true to your brand identity and values while adapting to market changes?
  • What strategies will you use to ensure your branding remains relevant in a competitive environment?
  • How often will you review your branding strategy?

Follow these steps, and your hospitality business can be branded without professional help. Always remember that branding is an ongoing process, so keep refining and strengthening your brand identity as your business grows.
